Most executives are highly dominant personality types. Many dominant people have a very high need to be right. Their confidence and self-assurance in their ideas and decisions is why people follow them. When you think about it…that drive to be right serves executives as they make decisions large and small, every day.
And when they are wrong, well let’s just say it can be a challenge to persuade them to see a different point of view. But when it comes to managing human capital and molding company culture, HR managers need to be heard.
Here are 4 ways to make sure you have a voice in the C-Suite:
- Speak up. Most dominant people respect individuals who stand up for their ideas and persist appropriately. Use the proper channels to voice your concerns and ideas.
- Be concise and be brief! Whether you have a written proposal or a presentation, keep it short, bulleted and to the point. While brief, be armed with facts and don’t forget to pay attention to the numbers and how your ideas will impact expenses. Get to the bottom line quickly!
- Don’t take rejection personally. Listen to the feedback and if appropriate; rethink and adjust your ideas and try again.
- Consider finding an ally. Partner with someone the executive has worked with and respects to help you support and make your case.
One way HR Managers can become even more invaluable to the C-Suite is to facilitate communications up, down and all around an organization. By helping your company communicate better, you will drive cultural, performance and bottom line improvement.
